Coping up with deadly Late blight disease in Potato and Tomato crops
Late blight disease in potato and tomato is caused by PHYTOPTHORA INFESTANS fungi and is one of the deadly diseases which can cause up to 80 % crop losses if uncontrolled.
Extra care needs to be taken by farmers to control and manage the disease. The disease is more common in cool and wet seasons of the year.
Wider spacing, balanced nutrition programme, effective weed management practices, selection of disease-free seed materials and proper crop disease control strategies may help to grow crop without diseases.
The late blight disease is airborne and if the climate is congenial to the pathogen to invade and spread some hours are enough to attack the crop with disease.
The late blight disease can managed with chemicals by different type and different classes of fungicides.
Based on the intensity of the late blight disease and as integrated late blight disease management programme
1. Systemic fungicides may be sprayed during early disease invasions stage
Metalaxyl 35 % [Krilaxyl . Krilaxyl power, Ridomet] - 0.5 gm/L to 1 gm/L of water
2. Contact fungicides - during early disease invasions stage
Mancozeb [Indofil M-45, Dithane M-45 etc., OR Chlorothalonil [ Ishaan, Kavach, Jatayu] OR Copper oxy chloride[ Blitox, Blue copper , Borogold] or Copper Hydroxide Kocide 2 – 2.5 gm /L OR Neel Cu 0.5 gm/L of water
3. Systemic + contact - may be during disease developing disease stage
a. Dimethomorph (Acrobat) + Mancozeb [Indofil M-45, Dithane M-45 etc.,OR Chlorothalonil [ Ishaan, Kavach, Jatayu] OR Propineb [ Antracol, Sanipeb] ;
b. Difenoconazole [Score] 0.5 mL/L+ Chlorothalonil [Ishaan, Kavach, Jatayu] 2 gm/L
4. Combo products may be during disease severe developing disease stage
Metalaxyl 8% + Mancozeb [ Ridomil gold, Ju Ridomil, Master, Krilaxy 72]
- Fluopicolide 4.44% + Fosetyl-Al [Profiler]
- Iprovalicarb + Propineb [Melody duo]
- Fenamidone + Mancozeb [Sectin]
- Fluopicolide + Propamocarb Hydrochloride[Infinito]
- Kresoxim – Methyl 15 % + Chlorothalonil [ Sarthak]
- Chlorothalonil + Metalaxyl-M [Folio gold] still more
5. Biological agents may also control the disease as they can feed on late blight disease causing pathogens.
The control of the disease is possible only with the use of highly effective fungicides.
