MANAGEMENT OF WHITEFLIES IN BEANS
INTRODUCTION:-
- Beans are the most adapted and commonly eaten foods throughout the world.
- Beans are a summer crop that needs warm temperatures to grow.
- These economical foods have the potential to improve the diet quality and long-term health of those who consume beans.
- A legume plant produces seeds in a pod. When pods mature, they turn yellow and dry up.
The various beans cultivated in India particularly in home gardens and some commercially are as follows:
- French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)
- Cow pea (Vigna sinensis)
- Cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba)
- Broad bean (Vicia faba)
- Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus)
- Soya bean (Glycine max)
- Garden beans (Dolichos lab lab).
Whiteflies in beans
- Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) Adults are soft-bodied, moth-like fly, yellowish dusted with white waxy powder and 1.0- 1.5 mm in length.
- The females prefer hairy leaf surfaces to lay more eggs, they mostly lay eggs near the veins on the underside of leaves.
- Upon hatching the nymph moves on the leaf surface to locate a suitable feeding site.
- The wings are covered with powdery wax and the body is light yellow in color.
- Both adults and nymphs suck plant sap and reduce vigor of the plant.
- When the population is high they secrete large quantities of honeydew, which favors the growth of sooty mould.
- Whiteflies are tiny white flying insects that congregate on the undersides of pole bean leaves.

Symptoms of Whiteflies in beans
- An easy way to detect the insects is to give the pole bean plant a gentle shake.
- When whiteflies are present, they rise in a cloud above the foliage.
- Whitefly nymphs are sometimes too tiny to see, even with a hand lens.
- Whiteflies feed on pole beans in many vegetable gardens and sometimes go unnoticed when populations are low.
- The insects are hard to detect because they are so small; however, when populations increase, it is almost impossible not to notice the clouds of tiny insects and the damage they cause.
- You can safely ignore small populations, but large populations result in substantial damage to the leaves and crop loss.
