Paddy Sheath Blight Management

Management of Sheath Blight disease in Paddy

Sheath Blight disease is fungal infection caused by Rhizoctonia solani. The disease is more prominent at tillering to heading stage.

Initially the symptoms will be observed on the sheaths nearer to the water level. Elliptical or oval or irregular greenish to greyish spots are developed, later developing to bigger sized whitish grey spots surrounded by blackish brown or purple brown border. Uncontrolled disease will rapidly become more and more by multiplying to cover entire tillers from water base to flag leaf. Heavily infected plants in the early heading and grain filling stages produce poorly filled grain, especially in the lower part of the panicle. Severe symptoms of sheath blight even cause death of whole plant.
