PELLETED SEEDS V/S NORMAL SEEDS

PELLETED SEEDS V/S NORMAL SEEDS

Pelleting of seeds is a process of coating of seeds with some inert material in order to maintain the uniformity of seed shape and weight. Usually clay or some organic materials are used as inert material for coating the seeds. This uniformity of seeds can be useful in sowing the seeds using manual or mechanical seeder. This will also helps in handling the seeds individually for placing them at even distance either by hand or by manual seeder. Pelleting of seeds will help in avoiding the thinning operating post sowing. This also helps in carrying out the weeding and other post sowing operations easily without much risk.

Pelleting/Priming of seeds is usually done for small seeds like carrot, onion, chillies etc. using the inert materials for the ease of seed handling. The pelleted seeds will have better and faster germination compared to the non primed seeds. They will have 50% faster germination compared to the non primed seeds. The quick germination of these seeds will also avoid soil borne diseases, soil crusting etc.

But the shelf life of the primed/pelleted seeds are lesser compared to the normal seeds as the process of germination will start before the sowing. So it is advisable to use the primed/pelleted seeds for sowing in current season than storing it for longer period.
