Good Agricultural Practices of Bhindi/Bhendi crop

The Bhindi/Bhendi is also known as okra is one of the most important commercial vegetables grown throughout India for its immature fruits which are generally cooked as vegetable.

Climate

The bhindi is warm season vegetable crop and requires a long warm and humid growing period. It is sensitive to frost and extremely low temperature. For normal growth and development temperature between 240C to 280C is preferred. For seed germination optimum soil moisture and a temperature between 25 0C to 35 0C is needed. There are three main planting seasons for bhindi i.e. February-March, June-July and October-November.

Soil

It is grown on sandy to clay soils but due to its well developed tap root system relatively light well drained and rich organic matter soil is ideal. The ideal pH for growth of plant is 6 - 6.8. Alkaline saline soil and poor drainage soils are not good for this crop.

Spacing: Bhindi seeds to be spaces at the distance of 0.75 ft x 0.75 ft or 0.75 ft x 1 ft or 1 ft x 1 ft

Varieties

Varieties suitable for the state should be grown.  Some of the familiar varieties grown in India are Shakthi, Samrat, Singham, Mahy- 10, Mona, Venus plus etc. The following link can be clicked to view the products.

Seed treatment with some protective agents may still help better germination, good survivability and also better yields. For chemical treatment seeds can be soaked in Ridomet 0.5 gm/L + Plantomycin 0.5 gm/L + Humic Acid[ V-Hume] 5 mL/L [mixture before sowing].
